Efficient Terrain Tiling with GISBox for Large Data Displays
Terrain tiling is a technique that divides large terrain datasets into smaller chunks (slices) for efficient transmission, rendering, and display. This technology is widely used in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), 3D geographic visualization, and virtual reality, especially when dealing with large-scale terrain data. It significantly improves system response speed and display efficiency. The core of this technology lies in the dynamic loading of tiles of different resolutions on demand, which reduces the load on memory and processors, as well as the occupation of network bandwidth, thereby providing users with a smoother and more efficient terrain browsing experience.

Let’s take a look at how to use GISBox for terrain tiling.
Open the GISBox software and click the “New Task” button in the upper right corner to create a tiling task.
Click on the left to switch to “Terrain Tiling” and then click the “+” button above to add files from our local system.
After adding the file, an address will be automatically generated in the “Export To” section, located in the same directory as the added file. Click the folder icon on the right to set the file export path. There are no special requirements for the export path; it can usually be saved in a folder, preferably an empty one, as otherwise, a prompt may appear.
After the tiling task is completed, click the “Folder” button on the right to view the converted files, as shown in the image below:
